Today, not much remains of the centuries-old Gurre Castle, which once housed King Valdemar Atterdag and King Erik of Pomerania, among others. All that remains of the original main castle are the ruins of the lower level of the old, imposing central tower and the massive outer wall with its four corner towers.
Gurre Castle was originally surrounded by water and marshland on a small islet in Lake Gurre. Subsequently, several remains of large buildings and an outer ring wall that encircled the castle have also been discovered.
The castle was abandoned in the early 1500s, after which it fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry, notably for the construction of Kronborg. It has since become a ruin, which was designated a historic site in 1835.
The castle’s dramatic history and magnificent ruins have given rise to legends and tales and served as a source of inspiration for artists such as Oehlenschläger, J.P. Jacobsen, H.C. Andersen, and Holger Drachmann.
